Ringlet Aphantopus hyperanthus Aberrations

Anatomical Terms

The terms  Recta  and  Versa relate to the Back and Front of the Wings respecfully, with the versa view being typical when basking

Key Facts
  • Ringlets are butterflies of Grassland
  • Fresh upperwings of the Ringlet (wingspan 42-52 mm) are velvety black with conspicuous white fringe to the wings 
  • Colour fades to a dark brown colour after a few days.
  • Variation in this butterfly is primarily focused on the rings on  hindwing
  • There is one generation each year, with adults emerging in the second half of June, peaking  mid-July
Aberrations occur  in this species where the ‘ringlets’ on the underside of the wing are either reduced or absent (form arĂȘte) or larger and elongated (form lanceolata).

underside of the forwings show the apical spot doubled so that below it and united with it there is a send and much smaller spot. Also there is an extra small pale spot in cell 2. Hindwings underside with an extra smaller  ocellus in cel l4  united with the normal one in cell 5



ab. caeca (Fuchs.Ent.Z.1884.45.p.252.)Underside of the forewings devoid of any sort of spots, the hindwings with some feebly indicated. A transitional form to ab. arete Muller.
